The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has called for calm noting that the security situation in the Karamoja Sub-Region, is under control.

This follows continuous and sustained media reports claiming that the situation has deteriorated, and is almost out of hand, especially after the unfortunate death of three geologists from the ministry of energy, and two UPDF personnel which occurred on March 21, 2022, in Moroto district at the hands of Turkana warriors that entered Uganda in search for pastures.

Defence spokesperson, Felix Kulayigye, in a March 29 statement, noted that since the launch of operation Usalama Kwa Wote in July 2021, a lot has been achieved.

“The joint UPDF and Uganda Police Forces deployed in the area are working tirelessly to maintain peace and security in the area,” Kulayigye said.

Kulayigye revealed that in the last 10 days, the UPDF has registered numerous achievements where 20 warriors were put out of action, 4 guns and 47 live rounds of ammunition recovered, 39 warriors arrested, and 776 livestock recovered.

He said in the same period, 4 UPDF soldiers were killed in action, 5 civilians killed by suspected Karimojong warriors and 170 livestock were reported stolen but are being tracked by the joint forces.

Overall Achievement of the operation: Warriors put out of action are 309, 184 guns recovered, 2,352 rounds of ammunition recovered, 1,792 warriors arrested, 360 warriors prosecuted and 17,186 livestock were recovered from the warriors.

“UPDF with other security agencies, the local leaders and all peace-loving civilians in Karamoja will continue working together to completely pacify Karamoja and end all the criminality in the sub-region and the neighbouring communities,” Kulayigye stated.
