The second edition of the Africa Military Games concluded in Abuja, Nigeria, with the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) athletes delivering a remarkable performance, clinching a total of nine medals—four gold, four silver, and one bronze.

The closing ceremony, held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, was graced by His Excellency Kashim Shettima, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In his address, H.E. Shettima praised the military athletes for promoting African unity and fostering friendship through sports.

“The existing unity in diversity is a strength that, when harnessed, can drive Africa’s socio-economic transformation and integration,” said Shettima.

The games, organized by the Organisation for Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), ran from November 18 to November 30, 2024.

The UPDF team showcased exceptional performance, with Pte Kugonza Joyce, Pte Amoko Innocent, Pte Namutebi Erina, and Pte Ocan James winning gold in various boxing categories.

Silver medals were secured by Pte Jopyem James, Pte Jamidali Adam (boxing), Pte Cheptoyek Ruth, and Pte Chemutai Leonard (athletics). Sgt Chebet Emily earned a bronze medal, capping off a commendable performance for the Ugandan contingent.

The UPDF team was commended for their exemplary representation of Uganda, bolstering the country’s reputation on the continental stage.

The success comes as Uganda prepares to co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2025 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

The closing ceremony was also attended by senior government and military officials from the participating countries, including Gen Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
