Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has re-opened part of Katonga Bridge on the Kampala-Masaka Road to light traffic.
According to UNRA, the bridge shall strictly be used by motorbikes, saloon cars, station wagons / SUVS, 14-seater (taxi) vans; and, 28-seater (coaster) Vans.
The authority noted that vehicles not included in the above category shall not be allowed to cross the bridge.
The bridge shall be a one-lane access and, therefore, travelers should expect some delays.
“Drivers are strictly encouraged to follow the guidelines of the Traffic Officers, the signs, and the markings on the road for safety and to avoid delays,” UNRA said in a statement.
It further observed that structural integrity assessments shall be carried out to determine the use of the bridge by heavier vehicles.
“Therefore, buses and lorries, or trucks of any type are prohibited from using the bridge until further notice. other interventions will continue with the objective of reinstating the road to its full use in the shortest time possible.”
Last month, heavy rains washed away part of the bridge which prompted UNRA and police to stop its use for safety reasons.
An alternative route via Ssembabule was secured. However, this was longer, expensive and tiring to some road users.
