Kitgum Municipality MP, Beatrice Anywar has revealed that Khamis Ali, the UNHCR officer attached to Lamwo refugee camp has finally been arrested for sexually molesting several girls in Kitgum.
The 65-year-old, Khamis is accused of sodomising close to 5 girls within the areas of Kitgum and Gulu. His file has been shielded for several months due to fear that Khamis could be a diplomat.
Anywar told journalists on Monday that after her intervention, some private investigators from Geneva were sent for a fact finding mission who later revealed that Khamis was not a diplomat and should be handled according to the laws of the land.
Anywar said that she ensured that the file was recalled from Gulu regional Police Station to Kampala under the orders of the CID Director, Doris Akullo.
“Khamis has since been arrested and is under custody at Jinja Road Police station,” Anywar said.
She noted that one of the victims, Jennifer Achan is currently under police protection and has since recorded a new statement in Kibuli but living in pain.
“Achan needs urgent health attention as well as psychological help and should be compensated for the damage Khamis has done to her life,” Anywar demanded.
Due to severe pain, the victim could not attend the press conference on Monday, Anywar said.
The MP narrated that Achan was an attendant at The Little Palace Hotel in Kitgum who was earning a total of Shs 100,000 to take care of her ailing mother who is suffering from cancer.
“Khamis who was a frequent customer of the Hotel convinced her and hired her for a better salary if she could work at his home hence falling prey to Khamis,” Anywar added.
A week ago, Anywar raised the concern regarding the UNHCR staffer to Parliament saying the accused had become “a disgrace to the society” by sexually harassing young girls.
