The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is set to introduce a personnel certification scheme to empower members of registered associations to conduct initial audit assessments before manufacturers apply for official certification.
UNBS Deputy Executive Director in charge of Standards, Ms. Patricia Bageine Ejalu, announced this initiative during a panel discussion at the 2nd Manufacturers’ Pre-Budget Breakfast Dialogue 2025, held at the Uganda Manufacturers’ Association (UMA) multi-purpose hall.
Ms. Bageine emphasized that the initiative would promote self-regulation, thereby enhancing the quality of products in the market.
Personnel certification will become the third certification scheme under UNBS, complementing existing product and systems certifications.
She further encouraged manufacturers to apply for certification of their products, stressing that increased compliance with relevant standards would help curb counterfeit products in the market.
Additionally, Ms. Bageine called for heightened efforts in standards development and increased awareness among manufacturers regarding standards, certification, and other UNBS services.
She urged manufacturers to seek laboratory recognition, allowing UNBS to incorporate their test results into the certification process.
