The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, commended Uganda and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s leadership role during the recent Summit of the Future, which culminated in the adoption of a Pact for the Future, involving a Global Digital Compact, along with a Declaration on Future Generations.

“The close cooperation of the Republic of Uganda with the United Nations, including its efforts to strengthen the rules-based multilateral system, is deeply appreciated,” he stated.

His Excellency António Guterres further appreciated Uganda as a long and valued partner of the United Nations in addressing global challenges, adding that the United Nations will remain committed to further strengthening the relationship for future developments.

Mr. Ayebare also briefed the President on Uganda’s Chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China.

“It’s been eight months since Uganda was elected to chair the group, and we have achieved a lot,” he said.

He noted that Uganda’s leadership has been impactful, and that the milestone of the Pact for the Future will go down in history as one of the major achievements of Uganda’s chairmanship of the Group of 77.

H.E Ayebare stated that Uganda’s chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China has been leading negotiations on climate change, noting that over 50 negotiators from the Group of 77 gathered in Kampala for a strategic retreat to prepare for COP 29 in Baku, where decisions that will impact the future of tackling climate change, especially regarding funding, will be made.

Uganda’s chairmanship will be ending this year on a high note with COP 29, but Uganda will continue to chair the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) for the next two years. Uganda is the only country that has chaired both forums that represent the Global South on the international scene.
