Electricity distributor, UMEME has blamed the accident which led to the crashing into two vehicles of an electric pole in Kampala on Wednesday afternoon to a truck that was driving past.

One saloon car was badly wrecked while the other had its hind screen smashed after a concrete electric pole fell along Wilson Road in Kampala. The two vehicles were parked along the road when the iron and concrete-made pole came crumbling on them.

A statement released by UMEME later on Wednesday attributed the incident which occurred at around 3pm to a truck which “came into contact with the wires and dragged down the concrete pole which collapsed on a few parked vehicles”.

Photos posted on social media moments after the incident show a tall green coloured FUSO lorry Reg No UAV 560E which had just driven past the wrecked vehicles. This is the same lorry UMEME faults for bringing down the wires and pole.

“Preliminary findings indicate that there were no casualties,” the statement said.

UMEME says that its technical team was quick to respond and that the affected street lighting pole was completely disconnected from the network to ensure safety of persons.

“We highly regret the incident and urge the public to be vigilant at all times and stay alert”.

Last year in April, Rose Muyinza Ssebaggala, a teacher at Kabojja International School narrowly survived being killed after an electric transformer fell, crashing into the vehicle she was driving along Dewinton Road in Kampala.
