Uganda’s long distance runner Solomon Munyo Mutai set new time best at the Venice Marathon over the weekend.

Mutai won in Venice in a course record time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 10 seconds, erasing the previous best time by three seconds set in 2009 by John Komen (Kenya).

“It was a good race, but the course was a bit challenging because of the 14 bridges. I started my running career because other runners inspired me in my country,” Mutai is quoted as saying.

Kenya’s Naibei and Ethiopian Abebe completed the podium places.

Mutai ran toe-to-toe with Naibei until 34km when he broke away, and he never looked back.

He established a good gap even when he took a wrong way at crossroad with 4km to go before getting back on right course, he was never to be caught.

It’s another milestone for Mutai who won bronze at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing and Silver at the 2018 Commonwealth games in Gold Coast.
