The Iranian Community, Ugandans, and institutions of higher learning gathered at Makerere University Business School to commemorate the 36th death anniversary of Imam Khomeini. The event, attended by members of the diplomatic corps, religious leaders, and academia, was a testament to the enduring legacy of the Iranian leader.
Speakers at the event praised Imam Khomeini’s contributions to the world, including his role in establishing diplomatic relations with African countries, promoting education and health, and standing up against tyranny and oppression.
Majid Saffar, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Uganda, described Imam Khomeini as a “voice of the oppressed and defender of world peace.”
Adding, “He rejected foreign invasion and aggression to protect the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He condemned the aggressive action of Israel against humanity in Palestine where basic human needs are denied.”
Asuman Basalirwa, the leader of the Parliamentary Muslim Caucus in the Parliament of Uganda, noted that Imam Khomeini’s leadership style was marked by simplicity and a commitment to serving the people.
“Imam Khomeini taught us that living a simple life doesn’t make one ineffective whatsoever,” he said.
Abdollah Abbasi the Iranian Cultural Counsellor noted that the death of Imam Khomeini still remains in the hearts of believers and free thinkers who believe in his contributions to the world beyond Iran.
In terms of rationality, he said Imam Khomeini was good at planning and managing society through drafting the constitution with Iranian people to live peacefully.
Dr. Ahmed Walugembe, Head of Marketing & Media Studies at MUBS, highlighted the university’s efforts to establish cooperation agreements with the Iranian government.
He noted that Makerere University Business School is ready to cooperate with the Iran embassy through cultural and academic exchange programs.
Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the Deputy Mufti of Uganda, rallied participants to emulate Imam Khomeini’s commitment to justice and equality. He also praised Iran’s support for the Palestinian people and its stance against Western powers.
Dr. Celestine Katongole, the head of the tourism department at Makerere University Business School, shared his experience of visiting Iran and witnessing its development and advancement. He urged for more trade with Iran, citing the country’s relatively cheaper quality products.
The event was a celebration of Imam Khomeini’s life and legacy, and a call to action for continued cooperation and solidarity between Uganda and Iran.
