The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda has revealed that a Ugandan National lost her life following the devastating earthquakes that occurred on Monday 6th February 2023 in the Republic of Türkiye near the border with Syria.
The victim has been identified as Ms. Babirye Florence.
The ministry noted that she was discovered dead in Hatay Province, one of the badly affected areas.
“The family of deceased has since been contacted and duly informed,” the Ministry revealed in a statement.
“The Uganda Embassy in Ankara – Türkiye remains in constant communication with the authorities of the Government of Türkiye and the leadership of Uganda community in Türkiye to offer consular support and necessary assistance.”
MoFA also revealed that 16 Ugandan nationals residing in Hatay and Malatya Province have been identified and contacted.
Earlier on Friday 10, the Ministry had reported that only one (01) Ugandan had sustained injuries, and was still undergoing treatment in a hospital in the City of Malatya where she continues to respond well.
Government appreciated efforts being undertaken by the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the various search and rescue teams providing all the necessary assistance to the affected victims.

At least 36,000 people are reported to have died in the earthquake that ravaged Turkey and Syria.
