Uganda, WFP Sign Agreement to Establish Global Fleet Hub in Kampala

Uganda has taken a major step in strengthening its regional humanitarian leadership after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) witnessed the signing of a landmark amendment to the Memorandum of Understanding establishing Kampala as the home of the WFP Global Fleet Hub.

The Hub will serve as a continental centre for rapid emergency response and humanitarian logistics.

Ambassador Charles Ssentongo, the Ministry’s Chief of Protocol, represented the Minister of Foreign Affairs and delivered the government’s statement. He thanked WFP for its sustained contribution to humanitarian work in Uganda and across the region, and commended the broader UN family for its consistent support to vulnerable communities.

Ambassador Ssentongo emphasised that hosting the Global Fleet Hub will expand employment and skills development opportunities for Ugandans, while reinforcing Uganda’s position as a strategic logistics and humanitarian coordination centre for Africa.

Following the ceremony, officials formally signed the Amendment to the MoU, authorising the deployment of special UN/WFP fleet plates. These plates will allow humanitarian vehicles to operate across borders without the delays associated with repeated country-by-country registration—significantly reducing response times during emergencies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to strengthening multilateral humanitarian efforts and deepening cooperation with international partners to advance regional stability and resilience.
