Albert Kabagema has been driving taxis in Kampala for nearly 30 years, earning a reputation as a kind, humble, and soft-spoken individual who is always ready with a smile. His story is one of grit and determination, having dropped out of school due to financial constraints, but refusing to let that setback define his future.
Albert’s journey is a testament to his resilience and vision. He worked as a tout, commonly known as a conductor, while learning to drive, and eventually got behind the wheel in 1995. Since then, he has built a successful career, owning his own taxi and providing for his family.
“I’ve been in this business for a long time and I love it,” Albert says. “It’s helped me build a home, buy two plots of land, and educate my children. I didn’t get the chance to finish school, but I’ve made sure my kids do.”
Uganda Waragi, in celebration of its 60th birthday, decided to recognize Albert’s dedication to his community with a fuel voucher worth 1 million shillings. The reward is part of their So UG So 60 campaign, which aims to shine a light on individuals who embody the Ugandan spirit.
Hillary Baguma, Brand Manager for Mainstream Spirits at Uganda Breweries, shared why Albert was chosen: “Albert represents the true Ugandan spirit – hardworking, hopeful, and determined. His journey is very inspirational, from driving someone’s taxi to having his own. As Uganda Waragi, we’re shining a light on people like him who make a real difference, even if they don’t always get noticed.”
Albert expressed his gratitude to Uganda Waragi, commending them for acknowledging his impact on the community.
