Uganda Takes Giant Leap in Digital Transformation

The 3rd National ICT Job Fair 2024 kicked off at the National ICT Innovation Hub in Nakawa, with a call to harness the transformative power of ICT to build a brighter future for all Ugandans.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja officially inaugurated the event, emphasizing the government’s commitment to digital transformation.

“This event is a testament to our collective commitment to harnessing the transformative power of ICT to build a brighter future for all Ugandans.”

Nabbanja noted that the government is committed to address a number of challenges faced by the ICT sector. 

“We shall keep on reducing the cost of Internet, we shall also increase on the digital device affordability by reducing on their prices.”

She also noted that the government is committed to curb cyber harassment on top of expanding broad band connectivity to all corners of the country so that no body is left behind in terms of digital transformation.

“I commend Huawei for having partnered with us (Government) in organizing this ICT Job fair which is a vital platform that bridges Gap between students, young professionals , government of Uganda and private sector,”

The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, highlighted the sector’s growth, saying, “The ICT sector employs over 1.3 million Ugandans and is growing rapidly. We recognize ICT as a priority in our national development plans.”

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Aminah Zawedde, noted, “The National ICT Job Fair 2024 has significantly influenced Uganda’s digital ecosystem, empowering over 1,000 young participants.”

Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Zhang Lizhong, praised the event’s success, saying, “China’s collaboration with Uganda in the ICT sector has been very fruitful. We encourage other companies to follow Huawei’s practice in establishing partnerships with Ugandan universities.”

He thanked Huawei Technologies for well representing China in Uganda, especially through its various community Social Responsibility (CSR) programs like the Digitruck which have created a great impact in lives of many Ugandans.

The Deputy Managing Director of Huawei Uganda, Ssali Gao, emphasized the importance of partnerships, saying, “With partnerships, we can ensure that no one is left behind in the digital transformation of the country. We aim to create at least 30,000 direct jobs in the ICT sector.”

The two-day fair focuses on addressing the skills gap and fostering innovation in Uganda’s tech landscape. It features career panels, skill-building workshops, networking opportunities, and company booths.

Dr. Baryomunsi added, “We are committed to addressing challenges in the ICT sector, including the cost of internet access and cyber crimes. We will ensure that every Ugandan, wherever they are, can use technology to transact business and access services.”

The event aims to generate a minimum of 30,000 direct employment opportunities within the ICT sector.
