The Government of Uganda has successfully evacuated 41 Ugandan students from Iran as conflict in the region continues to escalate, bringing them home safely via Entebbe International Airport.
The students were received over the weekend by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, who praised the swift intervention by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. “The government took immediate action to ensure our citizens returned home safe and sound. This was possible because of President Museveni’s leadership,” she said.
The Prime Minister also commended the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) for their key role in the evacuation operation, singling out Maj Gen Bob Ogik, Uganda’s Defence Attaché to Türkiye, for ensuring the students’ safety throughout the process.
“We remain committed to supporting any Ugandans still in conflict zones. We urge those in danger to reach out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or our embassies,” Nabbanja added.

Maj Gen Felix Kulayigye, Director of Defence Public Information, echoed the Prime Minister’s gratitude and emphasized the state’s responsibility toward its citizens abroad. “This demonstrates the government’s unwavering concern for Ugandans, no matter how far from home,” he said.
He also encouraged the returnees to remain patient and prioritize safety before resuming their studies.

Joseph Barigye, First Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the seamless coordination between the Ministry, UPDF, and Ugandan embassies as crucial to the operation’s success.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Isaac Nimwesiga expressed deep appreciation. “The situation in Iran was terrifying, but we are grateful to everyone who made our evacuation possible,” he said.

Another student, Sarah Mayanja, noted the comprehensive government support. “We didn’t have to worry about anything. The government ensured we were secure every step of the way.”
Officials from Uganda’s embassy in Iran were also present to receive the students, having played an instrumental role in coordinating their safe return.

This evacuation underscores Uganda’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad, particularly during times of geopolitical unrest. The government has reiterated its readiness to respond swiftly to protect its nationals wherever they may be.
