The Uganda Law Society (ULS) General Meeting, summoned by members for the first time in six years, got underway at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala on Wednesday, with members making key decisions on leadership and governance.

In a decisive vote, members extended the tenure of the Radical New Bar Governing Council, led by President Isaac Ssemakadde, S.C., by six months. The proposal received a commanding 251 votes, defeating an alternative three-month extension that garnered only 85 votes.

The General Meeting also unanimously resolved to hold elections for the ULS nominee to the Judicial Service Commission within one month, marking a significant step toward strengthening the society’s role in shaping Uganda’s justice system.

The current Radical New Bar Governing Council comprises: Isaac Ssemakadde, S.C. (President), Anthony Asiimwe (Vice President), Ssali Babu (Acting Secretary), Isiko Arthur (Treasurer), Lule Alexander (Acting Representative, Central Region), Muhumuza Samuel (Representative, Western Region), Eddie Nangulu (Representative, Eastern Region) and Egaru Emmanuel (Representative, Northern Region).

Advocates Ssali Babu and Lule Alexander were congratulated on their elevation to Acting Secretary and Acting Central Region Representative, respectively.

In another dramatic development, the meeting voted overwhelmingly to remove Advocates Munaabi Phillip and Geofrey Turyamusiima from the Governing Council. The motion passed with 394 votes in favour, 100 against, and 35 members undecided.

The meeting marks a turning point for the ULS, as members take a more active role in shaping the society’s leadership and governance agenda.
