Uganda’s U20 men’s team, the Hippos, began their AFCON U20 CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers campaign on a high note, defeating Ethiopia 3-0 at the Azam Complex in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, on Monday.
Godfrey Sekibengo opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a stunning volley, capitalizing on a poor clearance by an Ethiopian defender. Swabiri Mpasa doubled the lead just before halftime, volleying home Allan Oyirwoth’s header.
Despite Ethiopia’s efforts, Uganda’s defense, led by goalkeeper Abdu Magada and skipper Toto Majub, remained solid. Magada made a crucial save after a defensive mix-up to maintain the two-goal cushion.
In the 90th minute, substitute John Innocent Kisolo sealed the win with a powerful, deflected long-range strike.
Uganda head coach Matia Lule expressed satisfaction with the victory but acknowledged room for improvement. “I’m delighted with the 3-0 win, but I believe we can improve our performance and control certain situations.”
The Hippos made four substitutions, introducing Abubakali Walusimbi, Johnson Kabagambe, Kisolo, and Denis Kisiriko to maintain control.
