Cabinet sat on Monday, July 4 at State House, Entebbe, and approved the implementation of the 21st EAC Summit directive in Uganda to adopt Kiswahili as an official language of the community.
The cabinet meeting was chaired by President Yoweri Museveni.
Cabinet recommended that the teaching of the Kiswahili language in primary and secondary schools should be made compulsory and examinable.
It was further agreed that training programs for Parliament, cabinet and the media be initiated, according to the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi.
Kiswahili, mainly spoken in the East African region, is a fusion of Bantu dialects and Arabic languages.
It is widely spoken in parts of DR Congo, Rwanda and Burundi and an official language in Kenya, Tanzania and now Uganda.
Not long ago, the African Union adopted Kiswahili as one of its official working languages.
The United Nations on November 23, 2021, designated July 7 as the World Kiswahili Language Day.
