Dar, Tanzania – Uganda Christian University (UCU) has triumphed as the East African champions at the prestigious UW Privacy Moot Court Competition held in the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam.
Representing UCU’s School of Law, the dynamic duo of Sandra Ajambo and Heather Stacey Kutamba edged out a strong team from Kenya during the grand finale.
The victory comes with a prize of $1,500 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Privacy Symposium Africa in Nigeria later this year. The competition, which is the largest inter-university legal battle in East Africa, saw teams from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda compete in a rigorous showcase of legal skill, advocacy, and knowledge of privacy law.
UCU’s official social media page celebrated the achievement, stating, “We are the East African Champions! To God be the Glory!” The UW Privacy Moot Court Competition also congratulated the champions, noting, “Your brilliance, resilience & advocacy have earned you the crown.”
It added: “Huge applause for Strathmore University! Securing 2nd place. They have earned $500 and the Runners-Up trophy. Congratulations on an outstanding performance!”
The national rounds, held earlier this month, led up to the regional finals, where UCU demonstrated exceptional preparation and legal acumen to secure the top spot. This win not only highlights UCU’s prominence in legal education but also strengthens Uganda’s position in regional moot court competitions.
National ICRC Moot Champions
Earlier this month, UCU also claimed victory at the National International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Moot Competition on International Humanitarian Law, held at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
The UCU team not only qualified as National Champions but also walked away with multiple awards, including: Most Outstanding Student – Michelle Lubogo (Year 3), Best Memorial Award, and Best Overall Team Award.
The team comprised oralists Michelle Lubogo, Eliane Luwaga (Year 4), and Sandra Nakiganda (Year 3), with researchers Joel Magala (Year 2) and Sheena Akantabira (Year 3). This win qualifies UCU to represent Uganda at the All-Africa International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition in Nairobi, Kenya, scheduled for November 2025.
