Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Executive Director and Census Commissioner, Dr Chris Mukiza, has launched the census household listing and mapping activities in Wakiso District.
Dr Mukiza first made a courtesy call to the office of the Wakiso district chairman Matia Bwanika Lwanga before addressing the other leaders at Wakiso District Headquarters.
While interfacing with the leaders, Dr Mukiza called upon them to become census champions and sensitize the public within their jurisdiction about the National Housing and Population Census.
According to him, the Resident District Commissioners will be responsible for the safety of the census equipment and personnel.
“You will also be responsible for operationalizing activities to the lowest level,” he noted.
The district leadership, according to Dr Mukiza, will be responsible for the recruitment of the enumerators and enumeration supervisors by identifying people of good character who are known by the leaders.
“That is why we assembled the top leadership today. The top guards of Wakiso have all assembled here for this purpose,” he noted.
In response, Wakiso district RDC Justine Mbabazi urged other leaders to embrace the census, saying it will benefit every Ugandan.
She pledged her full support towards the security of all Census activities.
Wakiso District LCV Chairman Bwanika Matia Lwanga pledged his support to UBOS during the course of all census activities.
“Of course, in governance, we know how important population census is in terms of planning and service delivery,” he noted.
He added: “We are going to give you all the necessary support. We assure you of our commitment.”
Mayor Lukwago on board
On Thursday, the UBOS team led by the National Chief Statistician/ Executive Director and Census Commissioner Dr Mukiza paid a cordial visit to the Lord Mayor His Lordship Erias Lukwago to update him on the Census activities.
Dr Mukiza specifically made reference to the population dynamics of Kampala which has a high number of floating population ( mobile), also a reason why the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) is being Listed last in the ongoing household Listing and Mapping exercise that has already been completed across the country having started with the major cities.
In turn, Lukwago pledged his unwavering support to the Census programme citing the need for quality statistics for proper city planning which in turn impacts service delivery to the city dwellers.
