In a bold move following his inauguration, Donald Trump pardoned approximately 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This action fulfilled one of his campaign promises and sparked controversy as it targeted those who had stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump’s decision to grant pardons and commutations came on the heels of his return to the presidency. Despite the gravity of the Capitol riot—where police officers were assaulted, and lives were threatened—Trump proceeded to offer clemency to many of his supporters, including members of far-right groups like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys. While releasing these individuals from prison early, their convictions remained intact.

The riot resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including one Trump supporter, and around 140 police officers were injured. Critics have expressed outrage, as many believe Trump’s actions undermine justice and the rule of law, particularly as law enforcement and lawmakers were directly impacted by the violence.

Trump sworn in

Earlier in the day, Trump took the oath of office in the Capitol Rotunda, the same place that had been overrun by the mob four years prior. In his inaugural address, he portrayed himself as a savior chosen to restore America to greatness. Trump, now the oldest president to ever take office, also declared himself the first president in more than a century to win a second term after losing the White House, making his return to the White House a remarkable political comeback.

After the ceremony, Trump quickly moved to fulfill other campaign promises, including signing executive orders that reversed many of the policies enacted by his predecessor. He targeted issues such as immigration, climate change, and diversity initiatives, rolling back key Biden administration measures. Notably, he declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, suspended U.S. refugee programs, and withdrew the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement for the second time.

Trump’s inaugural day also saw him freeze federal hiring, impose limits on government regulations, and take steps to overhaul federal diversity programs. He reiterated his vision of transforming the government and society, focusing on issues like border security, the economy, and U.S. international relations, including controversial remarks about the Panama Canal and the Gulf of Mexico.

The pardon of nearly 1,500 individuals tied to the Capitol riot, along with other clemency actions, marked a significant moment in Trump’s second term, one that has already drawn sharp divisions across the country. The political fallout, both domestically and internationally, is likely to continue as Trump pursues his vision for the nation in the face of mounting legal and political challenges.
