The Airtel Africa Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Airtel Africa plc, has officially launched its flagship ‘Tech For Her’ program—an ambitious initiative aimed at equipping young women in Uganda, Kenya, and Zambia with high-demand digital skills to boost their employability in the global tech industry.
Launched in partnership with Tertiary DNS, the five-week intensive online program will offer training in areas such as Linux Administration, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, SQL, DevOps, and Ethical Hacking. The initiative aligns with the Foundation’s broader mission of advancing digital inclusion across Africa, with a focus on gender equity.
Participants will benefit from over 100 hours of guided learning, delivered through a flexible model that accommodates both working professionals (weekend sessions) and non-working participants (weekday sessions).

Uganda Launch: Empowering the Next Generation of Women in Tech
In Uganda, the program was unveiled at a launch event held at Kawempe Public Library, led by Resty Ayona, Head of Performance and Rewards at Airtel Uganda. “We are proud to join the rest of Africa in unveiling the ‘Tech For Her’ initiative by the Airtel Africa Foundation,” Ayona said.
“This five-week intensive program will empower 100 young Ugandan women with in-demand digital skills, including Linux Administration, Cybersecurity, SQL, DevOps, Ethical Hacking, and Data Analytics.”
Ayona also underscored the importance of removing systemic barriers that prevent women from participating fully in the digital economy. “We live in a world where algorithms shape our lives, apps build empires, and data drives economies. Yet, for many young women in Uganda, access to this digital revolution remains out of reach — blocked by gender bias, limited access, and a lack of opportunity.
This program is our key to unlocking that door. The top performers will not only receive certificates, but also gain access to internship opportunities at Airtel Uganda and mentorship from global tech leaders.”

Training Opportunities and Long-Term Support
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate basic digital literacy and possess at least a National Diploma (or equivalent) in Science and Technology or higher. Graduates of the program will continue to receive 12 months of post-training support, including career guidance and advanced skills development.
Those who score 90% or above will become eligible for internship placements at Airtel Africa and receive structured mentorship from experienced professionals in the global tech sector.
A Bold Commitment to Gender Equity and Inclusion
Dr. Segun Ogunsanya, Chair of Airtel Africa Foundation and CEO of Airtel Africa plc, emphasised the strategic importance of the initiative. “Africa’s digital revolution cannot reach its full potential without gender equity. The Tech For Her program helps to level the playing field by providing women with industry-relevant skills, mentorship, and pathways to high-growth tech roles around the world. By investing in Africa’s women, we are investing in sustainable economic transformation.”

He added that 30% of all training slots will be reserved for women from rural and underserved areas, while 40% will prioritise applicants from low-income households.
According to UNESCO, women represent just 30% of tech professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa, and hold only 2–8% of software development roles.
Annika Poutiainen, a member of the Airtel Africa Foundation committee, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to creating real impact. “At Airtel Africa, we are actively working to advance women in technology roles, and we are committed to a future where young women can be at the forefront of innovation.
In running this program, Airtel Africa Foundation is creating a pipeline of female tech leaders who will help unlock the vast digital opportunities both at home, in Africa, and further afield.”
