Teachers of French in Uganda Celebrate International Day With Commitment to Selfless Service

The Teachers of French in Uganda celebrated their day on November 23, 2024, at Kyambogo University. The celebration, was attended by Janya Obrecht, Deputy Head of Mission at the French Embassy, and Bridget Mugume, Dean of Students at Kyambogo University.

Obrecht praised the teachers for their dedication to promoting the French language. “The French Embassy is committed to supporting French education in Uganda, and we are proud to work with such dedicated teachers,” she said.

The event began with a community service activity, where teachers of French participated in cleaning the Banda Banda market and surrounding areas. The activities aimed at demonstrating roles teachers’ extend beyond the classroom.

Dr. Agatha Tumwine, president of the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda (APFO), who is also a lecturer at Makerere University, emphasized the importance of holistic citizenry. “As teachers of French, we are not limited to the classroom. We are also members of the community, and we must demonstrate our commitment to community values, including hygiene and environmental sensitivity.”

The celebration also included a roundtable discussion on the theme “The Role of a Teacher of French in the 21st Century Amidst Technological Advancements.” The discussion focused on the challenges and opportunities presented by technological advancements, including the introduction of AI and ChatGPT.

The association has close to 450 teachers of French spread across the country. However, there is still a shortage of lecturers of French in Ugandan universities. 

Tumwine called upon teachers of French to upgrade their skills to become lecturers, emphasizing the growing demand for French language professionals in the East African region.

The French Embassy, in partnership with the Alliance Francaise, is supporting the training of teachers of French. The Embassy’s Cooperation Attache for Education in Uganda, Louise Bay highlighted the importance of promoting the French language in Uganda, citing the growing demand for French language professionals in the tourism sector and the East African Community.

The celebration was a testament to the dedication and hard work of teachers of French in Uganda, It also marked an important milestone in the promotion of the French language in the country.
