Makerere University has ushered in a new era of student leadership with the election of Ssentamu Churchill James as the 91st Guild President.
The announcement was met with widespread celebration across the university community, as students, faculty, and various organisations extended their congratulations to the newly elected leader.
Makerere University officially confirmed the election results via its social media platforms, stating, “Congratulations to the 91st Guild President Elect H.E. Ssentamu Churchill James.” The Makerere Students’ Guild followed suit, hailing the new leader as “Endorsed by God.”
Serunjogi N Joy Eve, the outgoing 90th Vice President, was among those who praised Ssentamu’s resilience and faith, tweeting, “A true testament that God doesn’t choose the qualified but rather qualifies the chosen. Congratulations, Your Excellency Ssentamu Churchill James. The 91st and Makerere at large are truly blessed to be under the stewardship of such a resilient character.”

The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP), an organisation that nurtures young leaders in Uganda, also expressed its support, posting, “We join the rest of the Makerere community to congratulate Ssentamu Churchill James upon being elected 91st Guild President. As the Emerging Leaders Program, we wish you all the best in this huge yet exciting chapter. Godspeed!”
Further recognition came from the Makerere University Endowment Fund, which congratulated Ssentamu and wished him an impactful term in office. “Congratulations, Ssentamu Churchill James, on your election as the 91st Makerere University Guild President! The Makerere University Endowment Fund wishes you a successful and impactful term as you serve the student community,” the institution posted.
Ssentamu’s victory comes at a time when the university’s student body is seeking strong leadership to address pressing issues such as academic welfare, campus infrastructure, and student engagement in governance. His election campaign focused on transparency, student empowerment, and fostering unity among the diverse student population.
As he takes office, Ssentamu is expected to engage with various student groups, faculty members, and university management to implement policies that will improve student life at Makerere.
