A Rwandan Gynecological Oncologist, Dr. Raymond Dusabe was found murdered on Monday morning in a flat in Cape Town, officials at Rwandan High Commissioner to South Africa have said.

Rwandan High Commissioner to South Africa, Vincent Karega said Tuesday Police in South Africa had launched investigations to establish the motive of the murder of Rwanda’s first-ever gynaecological oncologist that occurred on Monday.

The deceased, 40, was on his holidays in the South African city, and is believed to have been stabbed to death by his assailants.

Dr Dusabe, who grew up as a Rwandan refugee in Burundi joined King Faisal Hospital in April last year. The hospital said they were saddened by untimely death of Dr Dusabe.

“King Faisal Hospital is saddened to announce the death of Dr. Raymond Dusabe. The administration wishes to express its most sincere sympathies to his family during this difficult time. His work here will not soon be forgotten. He will be greatly missed. May He Rest In Peace,” the hospital said in a tweet.

The gynaecological oncologist returned to Rwanda in 1998 after completing high school. He went on to study medicine at the National University of Rwanda and later pursued gynecology specialty at the master’s level.

When he completed his Master of Medicine Degree (MMed) at Stellenbosch University of South Africa in 2014, Tygerberg’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommended and financed him to sub-specialise in gynecologic oncology.

“We don’t have any gynaecological oncologists back home and, for most women in Rwanda, a cancer diagnosis is a death sentence. I realised there was a way of preventing much of this suffering,” Dr Dusabe is quoted by saying by the Stellenbosch University website.

In 2014, another Rwandan Patrick Karegeya, a former director of Rwanda’s external intelligence service, was found dead in a hotel room in South Africa. Evidence suggested he was murdered. At the time, South Africa police said Karegeya might have been strangled, with a rope and bloodied towel found in the hotel room safe.
