Rwanda Elections: Kagame Picks Early Lead with 99.15% of the Vote

Incumbent Rwandan President Kagame has picked an early lead of 99.15% of the vote in the ongoing 2024 presidential election.

This is according to partial provisional results after a 79% vote count.

According to Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA), Kagame is leading with 99.15% of the vote while opposition candidates Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana are trailing with 0.53% and 0.32%, respectively.

Habineza who is Kagame’s closest rival represents the Democratic Green Party while Mpayimana joined the race as an independent candidate.

Kagame, the leader of the RPF-Inkotanyi coalition, is seeking a third five-year term.

Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame joined other Rwandans on Monday to cast their votes in the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The couple cast their ballot at Gacuriro Technical Secondary School in Gacuriro Cell, Kinyinya Sector.

According to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) chairperson, Oda Gasinzigwa, over 7 million votes have been tallied in what she termed as “a safe and transparent atmosphere”.
