The Police Spokesperson for Kigezi region, Elly Matte says that Ishanga went missing on April 14 when he reported to his casual work in Rukungiri township but he never returned to his home.

Four days later, his body was retrieved from the water by residents and was taken to his home.

“When Police learnt of it, it took the body to Rwakabengo health centre where postmortem was done and the doctor ascertained that the deceased died out of drowning,” Matte said.

Matte said that the there were no signs of strangulation on his body to indicate that he was murdered.

“It is very unfortunate. It is believed that there was a heavy downpour on Saturday night. We believe he could have been swept away by water in the night,” the Regional Spokesperson added.

In 2017 during the time of the controversial Age Limit debate, Mzee Ishanga came to the spotlight after a video of him appealing to President Yoweri Museveni to step down from power, went viral on social media. He was vocally against the repealing of the Presidential Age Limit.

In the video also tweeted by opposition leader, Dr Kizza Besigye, Ishanga, dressed in a red necktie and red ribbon said; “Sir President, you have been in power for the last 30 or so years. And Uganda has educated people who are more knowledgeable than you now”.

“I ask you as your contemporary [in school] to step down, go and do other things. Let Ugandans choose a President of their choice to lead them,” he added.
