Education and research play a pivotal role in driving regional integration and development, State Minister for Higher Education Hon. Dr. John C. Muyingo has said.
Muyingo was on Thursday opening the two-day Annual Forum for Graduate Research and Policy Dialogue at Makerere University Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility (CFT2) Auditorium.
The dialogue aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry attracted seasoned researchers, early career researchers (especially doctoral students at Makerere) and stakeholders in the policy terrain to a dialogue on research and policy.
“As scholars and researchers, you are uniquely positioned to contribute to this noble endeavour,” Muyingo told them, adding:
“Regional integration is a cornerstone of our aspirations for a brighter future for our nation. In an increasingly interconnected world, the imperative to foster collaboration among neighbouring nations has never been more pressing.”
According to him, it is through cohesive efforts and shared endeavours that “we can overcome the numerous challenges that confront our region” and unlock its full potential for growth and development.”
“At the heart of regional integration lies the recognition of our interconnectedness – economically, socially, and culturally. By transcending borders and harnessing our collective strengths, we can create a more resilient and vibrant regional community.”
He said this entails breaking down barriers to trade, promoting cross-border investments, and facilitating the free flow of goods, services, and ideas.
“Everyone should support graduate training and research to solve problems faced by our people and country in general. Let us draw inspiration from the rich mix of our region’s history and heritage. Let us harness the spirit of cooperation and solidarity that has defined our shared journey thus far.”
He added: “I therefore urge each of you to embrace an interdisciplinary approach to your work, transcending traditional boundaries and fostering collaboration across various fields of study.”
According to Muyingo, research and innovation today absorb very considerable resources and frankly, research and development activities have a great influence on the policies and growth of Uganda as a whole.
“Your pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence holds the promise of transformative change, serving as a catalyst for innovation, progress, and inclusive growth. As scholars and researchers, you are uniquely positioned to contribute to this noble endeavour.”
The event features a diverse array of activities, including keynote speeches, panel discussions, and parallel presentations covering key sub-themes such as Health Systems, Energy Systems and Climate Change, Governance, Economic & Social Change, Innovation, Science, and Technological Advancement, Natural Resources Management, Food Security, and Competence-Based Learning.
