The Ministry of Public Service is seeking Shs7.2bn to procure brand-new luxurious cars for former leaders.
The list includes; former Vice President Edward Ssekandi and Former Prime Ministers Ruhakana Rugunda and Amama Mbabazi as part of their emolument’s benefits.
Rt. Hon. HE Edward Ssekandi was a Speaker of the Seventh and Eighth Parliaments of Uganda and former Vice President of Uganda.
Rugunda was the Prime Minister of Uganda from 2014 to 2021. He held a long series of cabinet posts under President Yoweri Museveni beginning in 1986.
John Patrick Amama Mbabazi served as the ninth Prime Minister of Uganda from 24 May 2011 to 19 September 2014. He later stood as a presidential candidate in 2016.
In December last year, Ugandans flew into a rage after the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, handed over five new fleets to the former presiding officers of the August House commending them for the strong contribution that Parliament was built on.
The former Speakers and deputy Speakers of Parliament who received the new vehicles included; Al Haji Moses Kigongo, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, Rebecca Kadaga and Prof. Edward Rugumayo.
While handing over the vehicles, Among revealed that Parliament will be giving the former Speakers new cars every 5 years and the cost of fuel, maintenance and salaries of the drivers of the vehicles will be paid by Ugandan taxpayers.
