PostBank Uganda’s innovative digital wallet, Wendi, has crossed the milestone of over 1 million users since its launch in 2023. Designed to foster financial inclusion and prosperity for Ugandans, Wendi has become a transformative tool in extending affordable financial services to underserved and unbanked communities.
A major contributor to this rapid uptake is Wendi’s savings product, which allows users to save from as little as UGX 20,000 and earn an impressive 10% annual interest. This initiative directly tackles Uganda’s poor saving culture—only 54% of Ugandans save, according to the FinScope Uganda 2018 survey—by offering a practical, rewarding solution amid rising living costs and stagnant incomes.
“Wendi not only encourages a savings culture but also ensures that savers witness their money significantly grow over time,” said Brenda Mpoora, Head of Fintech Business at PostBank Uganda. “Beyond personal savings, it simplifies and automates the operations of SACCOs, VSLAs, and Investment Clubs—digitising their management processes.”

The platform supports transparent group fund management by requiring three approvals (Chairperson, Secretary, and Treasurer) before disbursements and enabling members to track funds via their phones. It has also served as a key delivery channel for Parish Development Model (PDM) funds, ensuring secure, traceable, and cost-effective disbursement to last-mile beneficiaries.
To support its growth, PostBank partnered with the Uganda Microfinance Regulatory Authority (UMRA), FITSPA, WENIPS, and CARE International to onboard VSLAs, train SACCOs, and promote financial literacy. These partnerships have helped bridge the financial access gap, where only 6% of Ugandans have bank accounts, but 17% save via mobile phones (National Labour Force Survey, 2021).
The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development praised Wendi for eliminating the need for rural users to travel long distances for banking services, stating:
“Wendi has enhanced transparency and reduced transaction costs for PDM beneficiaries.”

Strategically aligned with MTN and Airtel, Wendi uses the combined reach of over 250,000 mobile money agents, 3,000 PostBank agents, and 60 bank branches to deliver services across Uganda. Users can transfer funds between bank and wallet, receive remittances (e.g., via Western Union), pay for utilities (Umeme, Water, URA, NSSF, Pay TV), school fees, airtime, and more—all without needing a PostBank account.
Accessible via the Wendi App for smartphones and the *USSD code 229# for feature phones, the platform is licensed by the Bank of Uganda under the National Payments Systems Act 2020.
Wendi not only empowers individuals with financial tools to save and invest, especially in key sectors like agriculture, which employs over 60% of Ugandans, but also accelerates the country’s transition toward a cashless, inclusive digital economy.
