PostBank Uganda Achieves 24% Growth in Agribusiness Lending

Julius Akais, Supervisor of Agriculture and Partnerships at PostBank

PostBank Uganda has recorded an impressive 24% growth in its agribusiness loan book between 2023 and 2024, a clear reflection of its deepening commitment to transforming the country’s agricultural sector.

This milestone underscores the success of the bank’s strategic pivot toward value chain financing and robust risk management in agricultural lending. By viewing agriculture as an interconnected ecosystem, rather than a standalone production process, PostBank has emerged as a vital partner in Uganda’s agricultural modernisation. Its inclusive approach supports both commercial enterprises and smallholder farmers across critical value chains such as dairy, poultry, and coffee.

Central to this growth has been the Agriculture Credit Facility (ACF)—a government initiative that shares 50% of the lending risk and subsidises interest payments for eligible farmers. By leveraging this facility, PostBank has expanded access to affordable financing, helping farmers overcome the traditional barriers of high interest rates and unpredictable returns.

The bank’s targeted focus on strategic crops and commodities—including maize, beans, soya beans, sorghum, and hay—has further cemented its reputation as a leader in agricultural finance. But PostBank’s role extends beyond lending. Through field visits, technical advisory services, and phased funding, the bank offers hands-on support to farmers, ensuring long-term success and resilience.

According to Julius Akais, Supervisor of Agriculture and Partnerships at PostBank, this growth aligns with broader national priorities of enhancing food security, commercial agriculture, and rural development. With nearly 70% of Uganda’s population reliant on agriculture, PostBank’s efforts are poised to drive inclusive economic growth and job creation, especially within rural communities.

Looking ahead, PostBank remains committed to sustainable agribusiness financing, evaluating not just the financial viability of loans but also their social and environmental impact. This forward-thinking approach is set to continue reshaping Uganda’s agricultural landscape, empowering farmers, and fostering prosperity across the nation.
