The Uganda Police Force has announced temporary traffic changes in Kampala and Entebbe ahead of the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to kick off on August 2.

The changes are aimed at ensuring the safe and smooth movement of teams, officials, and guests throughout the tournament period.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, SP Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, outlined a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan that will affect major routes, accommodation areas, training grounds, and match venues.

“To ensure public safety and minimize congestion, key traffic adjustments will be implemented throughout the event,” said SP Kananura.

Key Affected Routes Include:

Kampala-Entebbe Expressway – Northern Bypass – Bwaise Interchange; Kubiri Roundabout to Yusuf Lule Road; Kira Road Police Station – Bukoto Road and Kalerwe Interchange – Kisaasi Roundabout.

Naalya Interchange to Mandela National Stadium (Namboole); Busega to Wankulukuku Stadium; Makerere Hill Road to Kadiba Stadium, Mengo and Jinja Road to Kyambogo University Playground.

Traffic Diversions on Match Days:

Diversions will be implemented from 12:00 PM on match days at Namboole if required:

Trucks will be rerouted from Kalerwe, Mukono, and Seeta to alternative routes such as Gayaza-Kalagi Road.

Vehicles will be diverted from Naalya and Bweyogerere towards Kyaliwajjala and Kinawataka Road.

Pedestrian-only zones will be enforced from Kireka-Nasanga Junction to Jokas Hotel Road.

Access to Kireka Trading Centre will be blocked at Hared Petrol Station.

Parking Restrictions:

VIP-accredited vehicles only will be allowed to park at the Southern Playground Wing of Namboole Stadium.

The public is advised not to drive to the stadium unless they have valid VIP parking stickers.

Motorists without stickers will be turned away; alternative parking arrangements are recommended.

Police Deployment and Public Appeal:

Heavy deployment of traffic officers is expected along all designated routes, supported by lead escort vehicles for official convoys.

SP Kananura called on all road users to: obey all directives from traffic officers, exercise patience and courtesy and plan journeys early to avoid delays.

“Your cooperation is essential to the success and safety of this prestigious continental event,” he added.

The African Nations Championship (CHAN 2025), co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, will run from August 2 to August 30, with Uganda hosting Group C matches at Namboole.
