Casablanca – Uganda’s Prime Minister, Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja, and Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, have been honoured as the African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Persons of the Year 2024.
The prestigious recognition was announced during the 14th Annual ALM Persons of the Year Awards held in Casablanca, Morocco, on February 21–22, 2025.
Professor Nawangwe received the award for his exceptional leadership in higher education.
The accolade was presented to him by H.E. Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania and Chairman of the ALM Board, in the presence of the Guest of Honour, H.E. Andry Rajoelina, President of Madagascar.
In addition, he was bestowed with a Lifetime Award by the South Carolina House of Representatives for his contributions as an educator.

“I thank the ALM and the South Carolina House of Representatives for these prestigious awards, the voters across Africa who voted for me and all the staff and students of Makerere University, whose dedicated service made this possible,” said Prof Nawangwe in his acceptance speech.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja was recognised for her role in improving governance and leadership in Uganda, particularly in championing gender equality and inclusive economic growth.
The event highlighted her commitment to transformative policies that foster national and regional development.
Other distinguished honorees included: H.E. Andry Rajoelina, President of Madagascar, awarded African Political Leader of the Year 2024 for his work in reshaping Madagascar’s development landscape.

Bashir Jamoh, Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), recognised for his contributions to maritime safety and economic growth.
Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), acknowledged for his leadership in economic transformation and sustainability.
The event featured high-profile speakers and discussions on economic growth, sustainability, and inclusive leadership.
Notable attendees included H.E. Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President of Nigeria, and Khaled Fadly, Chairman of ALM Africa and Global Leadership Foundation.
The ALM Persons of the Year Awards continue to serve as a platform for celebrating transformative leadership and fostering dialogue on Africa’s interconnected future.
