It was all pomp and pageantry on Saturday, 21st January 2023 at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU)’s Main Campus, Mbale when thousands of graduands, their parents and guardians, and Distinguished local and International guests gathered to celebrate the University’s 31st Graduation Ceremony.
The President of Uganda, Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, was represented by Hon. John Mulimba, Minister of State for Regional Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Other Dignitaries included international guests, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, and IUIU’s Partner Agencies that work in Uganda.
The Federal Minister of Police, in the Republic of Nigeria, Al-Hajj Muhammad Maigari Dingyad, became a proud parent of two graduating Medical Doctors from IUIU’s Habib Medical School, which graduated 78 doctors.
This is the 3rd third cohort of doctors from IUIU.
The High Commissioners of the Federal Republics of Nigeria and Pakistan and the Deputy Ambassador of the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were also present.
IUIU Alumnus, Hon. Oleru Huda, Minister of State for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Council Member Hon. Syda Bumba, the Ambassador of Uganda to Saudi Arabia, HE Isaac Sebulime, and other Council Committee members also attended.
The Rector, Assoc. Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda highlighted IUIU’s accomplishments including the recent winning of the European Quality Award on December 20 2023 at the Oxford Summit of Leaders, London on top of the Best Consumer Choice Award IUIU scooped in 2022.
He called on the 1,989 graduands to go out with confidence and play their role in society.
The Chief Guest delivered the President’s speech and called on IUIU to improve in research and innovation and develop market-oriented programs.
Hon. John Mulimba, Minister of State for Regional Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs graced the auspicious occasion as the Chief guest.
At the graduation ceremony, the Rector, Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda presented different awards to the best graduands in different fields of study.
A total of 1,989 Students graduated at the ceremony, including 31 graduates with certificates, 240 with diplomas, 1564 with Bachelor and 154 with Postgraduate degrees.
The Recor pointed out in his speech, that 54% of the graduands are female and 46% are male.
This indicates that IUIU is committed to the education and development of the girl-child. Also in his remarks, he mentioned that IUIU had won the prestigious EUROPEAN QUALITY AWARD for its innovation and its adaptation of blended learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The female graduates also performed better than males in the first and second-class upper categories.
The Rector said the rise in the number of female graduates is a sign that the Muslim community is now committed to educating the girl child.
