The Ministry of Health Friday held the 3rd edition of the “Heroes in Health” Awards (HIHA) to recognise and honour health workers in Uganda.
This is a public choice award, where members of the public nominate and vote for their heroes in the health sector.
The 3rd edition of Heroes in Health Awards, an initiative to motivate the men and women that keep us safe from disease, were held on the 25th of November 2022 at the Commonwealth Resort in Munyonyo.
The special awards for this year’s edition of HIHA were awarded to Dr Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dr Richard Kabanda, the commissioner in charge of Health Promotion, Education, and Strategic Communication at the Ministry of Health, and Atek Kagirita, the Assistant Commissioner P.H.L Services/Director Public Health.
The winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award were: Prof. William Bazeyo, Dr David Basangwa, Dr Adeodata Kekitiinwa and the late Lucy Walusimbi.
Dr Richard Mugahi bagged another award for Excellence in Maternal and Child Health Care.

Sister Jane Frances Acam was awarded the midwife of the year.
The award winner for the mission/ faith health facility is Nkozi Hospital.
The winning public health facility was Kitagata Hospital.
The award winner for the Community Health Worker, in the western region is Orikushaba Isaac.
The award winner for Community Health Worker, in the eastern region, is Kasadha Nasser.
The award winner for the Community Health Worker, in the central region is Muhumuza Michael Clyde.
The award winner for the COVID-19 responder hospital/organization is Mulago hospital.
The award winner for the COVID-19 responder-individual is Ssekajja Christine Wiltshire.
The winner of the Pharmacovigilance award is Ronald Kiguba.
Prof. Anne Merriman is the award winner for palliative care.
The award winner for regional health champions, in the north, is Baifa Arwinyo.
The award winner for regional health champions, East is Watmon Robinson.
The award winner for regional health champions, west is the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Association (AMDA).
The award winner for regional health champions, central is Buganda kingdom.
The award winner for mental health advocate is Auma Rita.
The award winner for transport and logistics is Richard Ettanu.
The award winner for student innovation is Comfort Peace Ayikoru.
The award winner for Allied health worker is Bategheka Baker Tom.
The award winner for health innovation is Francis Pebalo.
The award winner for the private health facility is Minc Medical Center Isingiro.
The winner of the HIV/AIDs leader of the year is Shakira Namwanje.
The award winner for Media excellence is Henry Mugenyi.
The award winner for Use of ICT to improve health is Data Santorino.
The award winner for the nurse of the year is Isaac Mulyowa.
The award winner for doctor of the year is Innocent Herbert Nkonwa.
