Parliament to Convene Sunday to Pay Tribute to Abiriga

Parliament is scheduled to convene tomorrow, Sunday for Members of Parliament to pay tribute to their murdered fellow, Arua Municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga.

Abiriga was shot dead together with his bodyguard on Friday evening while driving to his home in Kawanda, Wakiso district.

According to the tentative program communicated by Defence Minister, Gen Jeje Odong to the press on Friday night, the body of late Abiriga will lie in State in Parliament on Sunday morning.

Gen Odong had visited the scene of crime together with other Ministers and officials from government.

The Minister said that from Abiriga’s body was taken by Police to the city mortuary at Mulago hospital for postmortem today, Saturday and that after the postmortem, the body will be handed to A-Plus Funeral Services at around 1pm.

SoftPower News understands that the Clerk to Parliament, Jane Kibirige has already summoned Members of Parliament who are currently on recess to convene on Sunday at 9am for the emergency session.

“The Clerk to Parliament informs Members of Parliament that there will be a sitting on Sunday at 9 am to pay tribute to the late Arua Municipality MP Hon Ibrahim Abiriga,” the Clerk to Parliament wrote in a communication to MPs.

“The body of the late will be brought to the House. May His Soul Rest In Peace,” she added.

Thereafter, Abiriga’s body will be flown to his ancestral home in Arua, North West of Uganda. Tentatively, the former MP will be buried on Monday.
