Residents of Osupa Village in Pallisa town Council in Pallisa district have intercepted a vehicle that was being driven by suspected cattle thieves.
The irate residents on Monday morning burnt the vehicle, a Prado Registration Number UAV517M, which the suspects are said to have been using in their raids.
According to police, the angry residents suspected the thieves were planning to load three animals in the vehicle before they were intercepted.
Umar Mugerwa, the Pallisa District Police Commander said that by the time Police arrived at the scene, the residents had already burnt the vehicle which they claimed the suspects wanted to load three heads of cattle on, which they failed.
He said that police only managed to recover one animal out of the three the residents claimed had been stolen, adding that the suspects fled the area and that they have started the investigations into the matter to ascertain the motive of both the suspected cattle thieves and the residents who burnt the vehicle.
Mugerwa said that of recent, there has been an increase in cattle theft in the district and the perpetrators use vehicles like taxis from which they remove the seats to transport the animals, adding the burnt vehicle also didn’t have seats.
