In a decisive push to address youth unemployment and bridge the regional skills gap, Brighter Monday in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, successfully hosted its inaugural Gulu Career Fair.

Held under the theme Matching Ambition with Opportunity, the landmark event gathered more than 1,000 ambitious participants and 59 employers, transforming the venue into a high-energy hub for recruitment, networking, and professional transformation.

The fair arrived at a critical juncture for the Ugandan labor market, which is currently undergoing a rapid shift toward a  skills-first economy.

Market insights shared during the event highlighted that while Northern Uganda possesses a burgeoning talent pool, there remains a significant information gap between regional job seekers and the evolving needs of modern employers.

Data suggests that nearly 65% of employers now prioritize soft skills, such as emotional intelligence and adaptability over traditional credentials alone.

The Dean of Students and the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Gulu University recognized the fair as an essential bridge between classroom theory and real-world employment.

The LC3 Vice Chairperson, Atim Vickie, encouraged the youth to take skilling seriously, noting that practical expertise is the most reliable currency in today’s competitive landscape.

This sentiment was echoed by keynote speaker Ojok Walter, who provided a roadmap for professional success by encouraging the youth to start right where they are with the tools at their disposal.

He reminded the audience that success is a matter of preparation meeting luck, advising them to “position themselves to be struck by the lightning of opportunities.”

The event featured a specialized AI Career Demo, introducing participants to the AI Career Assistant. This tool acts as a dedicated digital partner to help youth navigate the workplace by optimizing CVs for modern tracking systems and providing real-time guidance on professional development, including mock interviews and salary negotiation.

The Gen-Kazi Vision for Dignified Work

At the heart of this initiative is the Gen-Kazi (Generation Kazi) Programme, a joint venture between BrighterMonday Uganda and the Mastercard Foundation.

The programme is specifically designed to help young people find dignified and fulfilling work by focusing on the pillars of skilling and intentional career preparation.

Through Gen-Kazi, BrighterMonday is moving beyond traditional job listings to act as a long-term career partner. By equipping the youth of Gulu with the “Power Skills” that modern employers demand, the programme ensures that the next generation of workers is not just searching for jobs, but is actively matching their unique ambitions with sustainable, long-term opportunities.
