Joint Security Forces have arrested six people and intercepted explosives in Nabweru Division in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.
The suspects were arrested in a joint operation by the Uganda Police Force (UPF), Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) and International Security Organisation (ISO).
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the operation was carried out from Sunday evening to Monday morning in the areas of Nabweru North 1, Nabweru North ward, Nabweru Division in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.
“They have arrested suspected terrorists. This follows information that suspected terrorist camp here where they were assembling and making IEDs. These are locally made bombs to cause mayhem,” Owoyesigyire noted.
He said in the operation, they managed to arrest suspects including; Ssekidde Hamidu, Kalyango Muhammed, Katumba Abdul, Ssali Arafat, Asiimwe Emmanuel, and Muyonde Hamidu.
According to Owoyesigyire, one of the suspects was injured by a stray bullet.
“Muyonde is one of the suspects you have seen moving with the wounds. An accident occurred when one of the drivers was trying to drive away and an officer who had not carried out normal safety precautions (making sure his gun was safe), probably, mistakenly discharged a stray bullet which injured Muyonde Hamidu, 37 years of age. We have rushed him for treatment and we are hopeful that the injury is minor and he recovers very soon.”
He said the suspects will be taken to police stations for more interviews and interrogations to ascertain the aim and probably their targets.
“Currently, we don’t know them but we have information that they were planning to cause mayhem. It is through the investigations that we shall prefer charges to them.”
Security forces recovered items suspected to be used in making bombs.
They include; 12 wine bottles, binder nails, 4-inch and other nails of one and a half inches, charcoal dust, sugar, a plastic cup, dynamite, candle wicks, an electronic detonator, a non-electronic safety fuse, a pressure plate, head and hand socks.
“We shall inform you of the next course of action as the investigation progresses.”
