The State Minister of Sports, Peter Ogwang, has inaugurated and sworn in the newly appointed Council/Board of the National Council of Sports (NCS) to serve for a term of four years.
The board will be chaired by Ambrose Tashobya.
The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by the Commissioner in charge of Oaths, Dr. Macmot Adam Kibwanga.
In his remarks, Ogwang congratulated the board members for having passed the litmus test and urged the Board to embark on creating a strong basis for better governance, administration and management of sports in the country.
“I urge you to implement the new law (National Sports Act, 2023) in totality. Also, take interest in issues of accountability of public funds and prioritize funding for athletes,” he noted.
He called on them to implement the new sports law in totality with the professionalization of all sports associations and federations in a bid to encourage more Ugandans to take on sports.
“I urge you to come up with policies and strategies that will turn around the sports sub-sector in Uganda. Success in sports is about teamwork and I expect you to work as a team. We shall need the collective input by each of us to push us many miles on our journey to deliver vibrant sports in Uganda.”
The NCS Chairperson Tashobya thanked the Minister for the unique opportunity to serve the sports sub-sector.
The Council pledged to work closely with all sports stakeholders to fully execute the NCS mandate with key tasks which include; Implementation of the new National Sports Act, 2023; infrastructural development across the country; having Regulations and Statutory Instruments in place; establishing Anti-doping structures; have policies for talent identification and athlete selection; capacity building; streamline governance in National Sports Associations; establish partnerships; and streamlining funding for National Sports Associations.
Other members of the board include; former Olympic Marathon Gold medallist Stephen Kiprotich, Moses Omara Anyii, Zubair Galiwango, Ms. Jacqueline Basemera, Cecilia Anyakoit, and Gloria Evelyn Piloya.
