Opposition political party, National Unity Platform (NUP), has Tuesday morning unveiled Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro as their deputy spokesperson.
The party has only had the spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi, who also doubles as the Nakawa West MP, without a position of Deputy Spokesperson.
But on Monday the party announced at a press conference at their headquarters in Kamwokya that they had created the position and in it appointed Waiswa who has been serving as the Head of Training and Patriotism in NUP.
While unveiling him, the party’s Deputy President Northern region, Lina Zedriga described Waiswa as “one of the most courageous, available, accessible and intelligent young people” in the party, adding that he is the “most feared asset for NUP.”
Speaking in the same presser, Lewis Rubongoya, the party’s Secretary General said they have for long had only the spokesperson but “time had come for them to get a deputy.
On his part, Waiswa said he was humbled for the opportunity to serve and vowed to work as a messenger of what he called “great revolution.”
“I do not take this noble duty and responsibility given to me for granted. I will take it on with all the nobility it deserves, I will execute it with honour,” said Waiswa adding that the party won’t remain mute about any propaganda against it, but will instead rise to the occasion always to counter any falsehoods and lies that may arise.
A lawyer by profession, Waiswa has contested twice for Member of Parliament, first in Jinja South East and later Jinja South West constituencies, which he both lost.
A vocal politician, Waiswa is known for traversing the countryside with the NUP presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, aka Bobi Wine, in the recently concluded general elections as well taking on anyone who attacks the party and its leadership.
Before being unveiled, Waiswa appeared on Baba Television, where he defended NUP’s decision of abstaining from joining the newly created opposition pressure group, People’s Front for Transition (PFT) headed by four-time presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye, despite currently being the largest opposition political organization.
“Dr Besigye-led pressure group can not overshadow NUP/People Power. A football team in Serie B can not overshadow one in champions league. In Bobi Wine, we have a generational leader. You can not say that Christiano Ronaldo can be worried about Geoffrey Massa,” Waiswa said on Baba Television.
