Government Chief Whip, Thomas Tayebwa has been endorsed by the NRM party parliamentary caucus as the flag bearer for the upcoming deputy speakership race.
Tayebwa, went through unopposed after his contenders pulled out of the race.
Through his Official Twitter handle, Tayebwa said, “Thank you colleagues for endorsing me unopposed for Deputy Speaker on NRM ticket,”
The Ruhinda North legislator, will now face off with Kioga County and National Unity Platform’s Okot P’Bitek Moses who the opposition had earlier endorsed for the deputy speaker race.
With the development, if elected, Tayebwa will replace Anita Among who was Yesterday Nominated by CEC to replace Speaker Jacob Oulanya who passed away this past Sunday in Seattle USA.
Tayebwa is a trained lawyer who was appointed Government chief Whip last year, after president Museveni convinced him to drop his then ambitions for the Deputy Speakership position.
Meanwhile, the opposition caucus today voted JEEMA president Asuman Basalirwa to compete against NRM’s Anita Among for the speakership.
Basaalirwa polled 49 votes against Jonathan Odur’s 20 to emerge the winner.
