The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Betty Aol Ochan has expressed surprise that Parliament could not recall Members from recess to hold a Special Sitting in honor of the late former Attorney General, Peter Nyombi.
The late’s body was brought to Parliament to lay in State on Wednesday afternoon and will later be taken to Nakasongola for burial tomorrow.
Betty Aol appreciated Nyombi for having executed his role in national building.
“He was Attorney General, he did his work as an MP and as Attorney General. At this moment we can’t bring anything controversial but he played his part,” Aol said.
She added that, “It is very unfortunate that some of us only heard about him dead, it is also better that we hear about our colleagues when they are sick”.
The Leader of Opposition said that it was very unfortunate that Parliament was not going to have a special sitting in honour of late Nyombi.
“I have not been informed why we didn’t hold a special sitting for him but I was only told by the Government Chief Whip that the two Speakers are both not around.”
“This looks a bit strange to me and that is why some of us are thinking of having a committee of Speakers who should be more than two.”
Parliament should benchmark from Israel which has more than ten Speakers yet they are a small House, Aol advised.
She added that the opposition as well stands strong with the family and pray that God strengthens them in this trying moment.
“We console the family members who must come to terms with what happened and we should stand with them.”
