President Museveni on Tuesday attended the 5th Memorial Lecture of Joan Kagezi at Serena Hotel.

“It is good to know that she is not forgotten and the country remembers her for her distinguished service and patriotism,” Museveni said.

During the lecture, he expressed himself on the externalization of labour.

“We do not want our children to go abroad and work as Bapakasi, but we have a neo-colonial mentality,” he said.

“Someone would rather sell 5 acres to go and work abroad, yet we are preaching about how one can use 4 acres to transform from subsistence to commercial agriculture.”

Museveni said since 1996, he has been preaching against Land Fragmentation.

“I know we have destroyed the land but the little we have can still be used for selective enterprises that bring in income.”

According to him, four acres are enough for intensive agriculture; for poultry, piggery, dairy and food crops.

He said the people with enough land can practice extensive agriculture and create more jobs for the children who are going abroad to look for employment in a harsh environment.

“We can create over 50 million jobs from agriculture alone,” he noted.

Museveni also reiterated the government’s commitment to the Judiciary regarding salaries.

“We shall create a timeline to handle salaries, we cannot recruit 500 more Prosecutors without dealing with the salaries of the 300 we have. We shall sort that.”
