The new law seeks to strengthen the regulatory framework governing sports in Uganda, enhance athlete welfare, and promote the development of various sports disciplines across the country.

This amendment builds on the foundation laid by the National Sports Act, addressing gaps and introducing reforms aimed at elevating Uganda’s sporting sector to international standards.

The National Sports (Amendment) Bill, 2024 was passed by the Ugandan Parliament in December 2024 to align the country’s anti-doping laws with the World Anti-Doping Code (WADA).

It aimed to ensure Uganda can participate in international sports competitions without issues, protect the integrity of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and promote a positive image for Uganda in international sports.

Key amendments

The bill ensures that NADA operates independently, free from external control

NADA staff and directors.

The bill outlines how NADA staff and directors will be appointed and compensated

WADA standards.

The bill requires Uganda to publish international anti-doping standards in the media after WADA updates.
