President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged local leaders in Mbale to carry out massive sensitisation against environmental abuse and protection to save lives.
He also called for the urgent relocation of families at risk of death from runaway boulders on the slopes of Mt. Wanale in Mbale District.
His call follows reports of death and destruction caused by landslides and rolling boulders during heavy rains in the Mt. Elgon region.
Torrential rains are causing landslides and uprooting rocks laid bare by deforestation, poor farming methods and land fragmentation in the highly fertile region.
Last week, a 14 year old girl was crushed to death by a runaway rock. Two people were also injured.
