President Museveni on Wednesday met the Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, Mr Kenneth Roth, and his team in Ntungamo District.
“They shared with me a report which contains among other things; information on alleged torture and human rights violations,” Museveni said on Thursday morning.
He said cases of illegal detention, torture and human rights violations will not be tolerated.
“Torture is not only wrong but unnecessary. We shall verify the findings of this report and act accordingly,” he added.
“Glad to hear President Museveni vow that “illegal detention, torture and human rights violations will not be tolerated. Torture is not only wrong but unnecessary. We shall verify…and act accordingly.” Now the test is whether offenders are prosecuted. Impunity suggests approval,” said Roth in turn.
He added: “During our meeting with him yesterday, Ugandan President Museveni made various pledges to HRW to improve the country’s increasingly repressive human rights record. We will be looking for him to implement those pledges shortly.”
