President Museveni on Wednesday met and held discussions with eminent leaders from the Church of Uganda led by Archbishop Samuel Kazimba Mugalu.
They talked about the development of the Janani Luwum site at Mucwini in Kitgum District.
“I had earlier suggested to them that we build a multi-purpose stadium in memory of Janani Luwum,” Museveni said.
Museveni told the Church to expand the idea and integrate the sports sector so that the site can also make money through events such as sports competitions, music concerts, and political gatherings.
“I am happy they bought my idea. Let us integrate the idea of Sports & Religion into the project. I am looking at Namboole as a key study because we use it for many events at a fee,” he added.
Finance minister Matia Kasaija said the government will budget for the stadium in the 2023/2024 Financial Year.
The project is expected to cost Shs78.69 billion.
Luwum, the third Archbishop of Uganda, was killed by the former President of Uganda Idi Amin.
The State House, Entebbe meeting was attended by the Bishop of Kitgum Diocese, Rev Wilson Kitara.
