President Yoweri Museveni has pardoned nineteen (19) supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) recently convicted on charges of Treachery c/s 129 (a) of the UPDF Act, Cap 330 and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.
“IN EXERCISE of the power vested in me under Article 121(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, 1995 as amended and on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, I hereby grant a pardon of the sentence to the persons below of the offence of Treachery c/s 129 (a) of the UPDF Act, Cap 330 and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition c/s 3 (1) (2) (a) of the Fire Arms Act, Cap 320,” the instrument of pardon read.
The pardoned individuals were arrested during the 2021 general elections. They were later convicted by the Court Martial after pleading guilty to the charges.
The General Court Martial sentenced them to three months and 22 days in prison. In his ruling, the chairman of the General Court Martial, Brigadier Robert Freeman Mugabe, considered that the accused were first-time offenders and had pleaded guilty.
He also noted that they had spent three years, four months, and eight days on remand, and an additional 16 months on trial.
Initially, a five-year jail term was pronounced, but Mugabe deducted the time they had already served, resulting in the final sentence of three months and 22 days at Luzira Prison.
These include Olivia Lutaya, and Rashid Ssempijja Kakooza Muhuyadin, among others.
