President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered an expeditious inquiry into allegations of theft of iron sheets and other relief items that were meant for Karamoja region.
According to Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, the directive followed increased complaints from the intended beneficiaries and other concerned citizens.
“In line with the above, the Director of Public Prosecution using her Constitutional powers has directed CID working jointly with SH/ACU to expeditiously conduct a criminal investigation into the matter,” Enanga told reporters at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.
He revealed that the task will be handled by a joint team comprised of officers from DPP, CID and State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
Enanga explained that the joint team shall expand on the preliminary inquiries so far conducted and further liaise with IGG and Parliament on the same matter.
“The team shall interact with all the concerned personalities to ensure an expeditious investigation,” Enanga said, adding, the directive by the president, further demonstrates the commitment of Government to fight corruption Uganda.
A number of cabinet ministers are said to have shared iron sheets meant for the vulnerable people of Karamoja.
The Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Dr Mary Kitutu, has also been directly implicated in the mismanagement of the relief items.
