Entebbe – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni today met outgoing and incoming Members of Parliament from the Lango Sub-region at State House, Entebbe, congratulating them on the National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s strong showing in the recent general elections—the party’s best performance in the region since 1996.
“I am happy to meet you and congratulate you for the good work in Lango and Northern Uganda in general,” said President Museveni, who also serves as NRM National Chairman.
Reflecting on Uganda’s political history, the President cited leaders such as Milton Obote, Edward Mutesa II, and John Kakonge, noting that while they rose to leadership at a young age, divisions rooted in tribalism and religion ultimately weakened national cohesion.
“The country was in their hands, but because they went into tribalism and religion, they lost it,” he said. He questioned why some leaders prioritise identity politics over addressing critical issues that affect all citizens, such as poverty and household incomes.
President Museveni reiterated that the NRM’s founding mission was to unite Ugandans and eliminate sectarianism. Drawing on biblical principles, he emphasised reconciliation and inclusiveness, urging party members to safeguard unity within the NRM and the wider community.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven,” he said, calling on legislators to work closely with their constituents and focus on pro-people programmes that improve livelihoods and household incomes.
He highlighted government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and other wealth-creation interventions, stressing that they must effectively reach every household. He also underscored the importance of strengthening service delivery in health, roads, and other development sectors.
Speaking on behalf of the MPs, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda, thanked the President for convening the meeting and for his leadership. He called on leaders at all levels to emulate President Museveni’s example, particularly in promoting unity, discipline, and accountability within the Movement.
Hon. Obua emphasised the need to intensify the fight against corruption and ensure the effective implementation of government programmes. The MPs also acknowledged the NRM government’s visible development footprint in Lango, particularly praising the Parish Development Model for significantly improving livelihoods across the region.
